HDRI is the abbreviation of High-Dynamic Range (HDR) image, which was invented to solve this problem. Simply put, HDRI is an image with a very wide range of brightness, and it has a larger brightness data storage than other formats of images. , and the way it records the brightness is different from the traditional picture. Instead of compressing the brightness information into the 8bit or 16bit color space in a non-linear way, it records the brightness information in a directly corresponding way. It can be said to record the picture environment. , so we can use this image to "light up" the scene. There are many HDRI files provided as panoramas that we can also use as an environment background to generate reflections and refractions. It is emphasized here that there is an essential difference between HDRI and panorama. Panorama refers to an ordinary image containing a 360-degree range scene, which can be in JPG format, BMP format, TGA format, etc. It belongs to Low-Dynamic Range Radiance Image. There is no lighting information.
HDRI has a larger luminance range than normal RGB format images (only 8bit luminance range). Standard RGB images have maximum brightness values of 255/255/255. If such an image is used in conjunction with radiosity to illuminate a scene, even the brightest white is not enough to provide enough illumination to simulate real world conditions. Rendering results will look flat and lacking in contrast, because the image file describes a wide range of real-world lighting information in just an 8-bit RGB image. But using HDRI is equivalent to adding the brightness value of sunlight (such as 6000%) to the radiosity calculation and reflection rendering, and the rendering results are also very realistic and beautiful. The two rendered images below show the huge difference using HDRI.
An HDRI file is a file with the extension hdr or tif that has enough capacity to hold lighting information, but not necessarily a panorama. Dynamic Range is the relative ratio between the lightest and darkest parts of a scene. An HDR picture, which records the brightness value of the actual scene far beyond 256 levels, and the excess part cannot be displayed on the screen. It can be imagined like this: open a picture in photoshop that is taken from indoors to the outside of the window, the part outside the window is under strong sunlight, overexposed, it is white, and there is not much detail. You won't be able to do anything about it, dimming will just turn it into a gray, and it won't bring out any more detail. But if the same scene is recorded by hdr, you reduce the exposure, the original pure white part will show more details.
